Mamady Keita's classic documentary DVD, "Djembefola", has just been re-issued on DVD, along with the sequel, "Mogobalu", which was previously unavailable in North America. This new DVD features 2 feature films, and includes bonus live-concert footage as well!

"Djembefola" is a classic...it follows Mamady to his village of Balandugu. A great DVD for teachers; it is a great way to get non-drummers excited.

"Mogobalu (The Masters)" is Laurent Chevalier's follow-up documentary, which features live footage of master drummers Doudou N'diaye Rose, Soungalo Coulibaly, Famoudou Konate, & Fadouba Oulare with footage from Europe and Guinea. "Mogobalu" takes a closer look at the performance aspect of Mamady's career, along with his collaborations with other great drummers around the world.
Highly Recommended.

Mamady Keita:
"Solo Instructional Series"

NEW!! Solo Instructional Series by Mamady Keita. For the advanced to professional player, this solo series includes 12 separate CDs! All solos and improvisations are played by Mamady. This series is designed to demonstrate the solos, and then provide the background instrumentation to play along with the CD at varying tempos.

In the first part of each CD, you'll hear the voices of the individual parts, as well as the traditional djembe solo. In the next play-along section, you can play along at varying tempos, practicing the solo...or create one of your own...all backed by the supporting djembe and dunun parts.

The "Solo Origineux" are traditional solos that go with a particular rhythm. Think of them as building blocks that you can cut-and-paste in creating your own solos. Or, think of them as a jazz head that you play at the beginning of the tune, and then use as themes in the solo sections. The solos have lots of rolls and phrases that fit perfectly with the other drums, and most importantly, with the dancers' steps. Once you have the building blocks, you'll be able to apply these techniques to other rhythms or even other instruments like Quinto, Bongos, or Timbales.

NEW LOWER PRICE! CDs are $ 20.00 each or only $199.00 for the complete set of 12!

Aly Sylla: "Susu Djembe Instructional-DVD"

What makes this DVD unique is the perspective. Aly Sylla is a native Susu who is an artist and technical director with "Percussions de Guinee". Filmed under a mango tree in Guinea, with kids in the background, the best part of is the 30 minute performance section where all the rhythms are played with a full group: 2 djembes, bote, kenkeni, sangban, dununba, and bells. The other thing that makes this a MUST for serious players is that it is the first we've seen to teach the Bote drum with N'baba bell...a trademark Susu drum. The weak point here is the actual drum instruction, which has no explanation or text. But if you study it and check it against the performance, you can figure it out: Sinte, Yoki, Kanya Soli, Sore, Temoure, & Macuru.

This NEW! book by Billy Martin of Medeski, Martin & Wood fame has a new book that digs deep into the African-fed rhythm. The claves contained in the book open up rhythmic subdivisions, substitutions, and wide vocabulary to draw upon. The non-traditional notation system takes a little getting used to, but will ultimately free you from the awkward constraint of using western notation to interpret African Rhythm. 87 audio tracks.
