A Brief Background on Famoudou's Workshops:

Famoudou Konate, one of the Grand Masters of the djembe drum and former lead drummer with Ballet Africain will do an intensive mini-camp in Portland, Oregon. The mini camp format he employs is an intensive 4 hours of instruction per day. He will build rhythms from the bottom (dununs) to top (djembe solos) and offers all participants significant hands-on experience and personal contact. This is the teaching method that Famoudou has used in Europe and Guinea for over 25 years. The mini-camp format has a long track record for producing well-rounded, highly skilled djembe players.

In addition to the basic rhythms, students will learn echauffements (the "heating up" to end a solo), solo techniques, intros and breaks, and even the accompanying songs. He will teach his own compositions and arrangements as well as traditional ones. Famoudou's teaching method allows for each student to learn all 3 bass drum voices as well.

You might ask..."Do I have to be a Pro?" Absolutely not. All levels, including beginners and pros, are welcome and encouraged to attend. Famoudou is an extremely patient and skilled instructor who has taught students with varying degrees of proficiency for many years. If there is a range of skill levels among the students, they will be assigned parts according to their ability, so that everyone can get the most out of the instruction.
