Mapate Diop: "Jamono: The Tradition"

NEW CD!! You may recognize Mapathe as the drummer from Sabar Wolof on the Village Pulse label that we also carry. This new disc is clearly some of the best work to date. Tight vocals, Tama (Talking Drum), and crazy Sabar breaks are laced all the way through this disc. Check out these clips!

Sing Sing Juniors: "Sabar Drum Ensemble"

THe best new Sabar CD in many years, the Sing Sing Juniors are all descendents of Biram Gueye Faye, the first Gewel (jeli, griot) where Dakar is located. Featuring 14 drummers and vocalists, this group is tight, energetic, and the sound quality is very clear. 62 minutes.

Tama Walo: "Keepers of the Talking Drum"

One of Senegal's leading tama troups. The Tama drum is the Senegalese version of the "talking drum". This album consists of 5 tama drums, with the drummers taking turns improvising.

Doudou N'Diaye Rose: "Djabote"

If you like Sabar drumming, Doudou is the preeminent artist in Senegal---with 50 drummers and 80 singers! The video was filmed on Goree Island while Rose recorded Djabote for Real World records.
This CD is one you must have!

Boubacar Diagne: "Tabala Wolof: Sufi Music of Senegal":

"Boubacar, who leads this ensemble, is a 7th generation Tabla Wolof drummer. Tabala Wolof is the ritual drum music of the Sufi order, Khadriya, which was founded in Baghdad in the 1100's. Led by a massive bass drum during worship, drummers inspire ecstatic song."

Mamadou Ly: "Mandinka Drum Master"

The principal Mandinka drummer for the National Ballet of Senegal for 25 years, Ly plays Kutiro.

"The Rough Guide, Senegal & Gambia":

Another great Rough Guide production...this time focusing on the music of Senegal and Gambia. Featuring greats such as Youssou N'Dour, Baaba Maal, and Cheikh Lo...this is an enhanced CD, with bonus tracks about Senegal/Gambia.

Saikouba Badjie: "Bougarabou: Solo Drumming of Casamance"

Saikouba plays the original african congas. Bougarabou's have thick calf-skin heads, are played in sets of four, and are incredibly melodic.

Saikouba Badjie & Modibo Traore: "Babu Casamance!"

Another rare recording of Bougarabou drumming from Casamance in Southern Senegal. Here Modibo Traore plays with the great Saikouba Bajjie. It's recorded in the village...it's got the vibe.

Omar Thiam & Jam Bugum: "Sabar: The Soul of Senegal"

There aren't many Sabar discs on the market, and this is one of my favorites. It's a smaller group (12 drummers as opposed to the 50 that usually travel with Doudou N'diaye Rose) so you can hear it all clearly. Loaded with "Baks" which are the long breaks that all drummers play before going into the groove, there is enough here to make you want to jump up and jump in. Great liner notes with names of drums, and explanations of rhythms. Many think of Senegalese drumming as Wolof, but indeed much of it comes from the Serer ethnic group (of which Youssou N'Dour is half...) This is a rare Serer sabar disc that seeks to de-mystify, while bringing the village to you. Try to hear the "baks" in this cut.
